YOUR WATER IS NOT AS SAFE AS YOU THINK

The EPA has identified over 700 contaminants in U.S. drinking water, but only regulates 91 of them. This means hundreds of potentially harmful substances could be flowing from your taps right now—legally.

The Shocking Truth About Your Daily Bath

Did you know that the chlorine levels in your municipal tap water can be as high as those in a freshly "shocked" swimming pool—the same pool you're warned not to enter for at least 24 hours? Yet every day, millions of parents bathe their children in this same water, unknowingly exposing their delicate skin to harsh chemicals designed to kill bacteria and microorganisms.

Chlorine & Chloramine: The Hidden Dangers in Every Shower

Municipal water treatment facilities across America use chlorine and increasingly chloramine (a more stable combination of chlorine and ammonia) to disinfect public water supplies. While these chemicals are effective at killing harmful bacteria and viruses, they don’t discriminate between dangerous pathogens and your body’s beneficial bacteria and sensitive skin cells.

FACT

The EPA allows chlorine levels in drinking water up to 4 parts per million (ppm). Swimming pools typically maintain 1-3 ppm, with "shock treatments" temporarily raising levels to 5-10 ppm. Many municipal water systems operate at the upper limits of these allowances, especially during certain seasons or contamination events.

What Happens to Your Skin During a 10-Minute Shower?

When you shower or bathe in chlorinated water, three critical exposure routes occur simultaneously:
01. Dermal Absorption: Your skin, the body’s largest organ, absorbs chlorine and chloramine directly into your bloodstream. Studies show that you can absorb more chlorine through skin contact during a 10-minute shower than by drinking 8 glasses of the same water.1
02. Inhalation: Hot shower water releases chlorine gas that you inhale deeply into your lungs, where it enters your bloodstream with even greater efficiency than through drinking.2 The Harvard School of Public Health found that chloroform exposure (a byproduct of chlorination) from showering can be up to 6-100 times higher than from drinking the same water.3
03. Direct Contact: Chlorinated water strips away your skin’s natural protective oils and beneficial bacteria, disrupting your skin’s microbiome and natural barrier function.4 This can trigger or worsen eczema, psoriasis, and other skin conditions.

CHLORINE DANGER: CHILDREN AT RISK

Children's skin is approximately 30% thinner than adult skin and absorbs contaminants more readily. Their developing immune and detoxification systems are less equipped to handle chemical exposure. A study in the Archives of Environmental Health found that children who swim regularly in chlorinated pools have higher rates of allergic conditions and respiratory symptoms.5

The Dermatologist's Perspective: What Experts Say

"In my practice, I regularly see patients whose skin conditions—including eczema, psoriasis, and general dryness—significantly improve after they install whole-house water filtration systems. Chlorine and chloramine in municipal water are essentially designed to kill organisms, and unfortunately, they don't discriminate between harmful bacteria and your skin's beneficial microbiome."

Dr. Jennifer Haley Board-Certified Dermatologist, American Academy of Dermatology

"Hard water and chlorinated water can worsen atopic dermatitis and cause dry skin. I recommend patients with sensitive skin conditions install water softeners and filters to remove these irritants. The improvement in skin hydration and barrier function can be remarkable."

Dr. Whitney Bowe Board-Certified Dermatologist and Author of "The Beauty of Dirty Skin"

"Many of my patients with chronic skin conditions don't realize that their tap water could be exacerbating their symptoms. When we eliminate chlorine exposure through whole-home filtration, we often see significant improvements in skin health within just 2-3 weeks."

Dr. Richard Fried Clinical Dermatologist and Clinical Psychologist, Yardley Dermatology

The Scientific Evidence: Chlorine's Impact on Your Body

Research published in the Journal of Environmental Health has linked regular exposure to chlorinated water with:
Water Source
Typical Chlorine Level
Safety Status
Skin Impact
PURIVO Filtered Water
0.0 ppm
SAFE
Maintains natural skin barrier and microbiome
Bottled Spring Water
0.0-0.5 ppm
GENERALLY SAFE
Minimal impact on skin (but not practical for bathing)
Average Municipal Tap Water
2.0-4.0 ppm
CONCERNING
Strips natural oils, disrupts microbiome, causes dryness
Swimming Pool (Maintained)
1.0-3.0 ppm
CONCERNING
Causes dryness, redness, potential irritation
Swimming Pool (After Shock)
5.0-10.0 ppm
DANGEROUS
Severe drying, irritation, potential chemical burns
Municipal Water During “Chlorine Burn”*
Up to 4.0 ppm (free chlorine)
DANGEROUS
Severe irritation, especially for sensitive skin
*Many municipal water systems periodically conduct “chlorine burns” where they temporarily switch from chloramine to free chlorine at high levels to clean the water distribution system.

PFAS & PFOA: "Forever Chemicals" in Your Drinking Water

While chlorine and chloramine affect your skin and respiratory system through direct contact, an even more insidious threat lurks in many American water supplies: PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid).

FACT

PFAS chemicals are detected in the blood of 97% of Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These "forever chemicals" do not break down in the environment or in your body and can accumulate over time, leading to serious health concerns.13

WARNING

In 2022, the Environmental Protection Agency dramatically reduced its health advisory levels for PFOA and PFOS (two common PFAS chemicals) from 70 parts per trillion to just 0.004 parts per trillion for PFOA and 0.02 parts per trillion for PFOS—a reduction of over 17,000 times. This change reflects growing scientific evidence about the dangers of even minute exposures to these chemicals.14

What Are PFAS and PFOA?

PFAS and PFOA are man-made chemicals used since the 1940s in products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water. They’re found in:

The Health Risks of PFAS/PFOA Exposure

Scientific studies have linked PFAS/PFOA exposure to:

PFAS CONTAMINATION CRISIS

A 2023 U.S. Geological Survey study found that at least 45% of U.S. tap water contains PFAS chemicals. This means nearly half of all Americans are consuming these dangerous "forever chemicals" daily, often without knowing it.22

Why Municipal Water Treatment Isn't Enough

Standard municipal water treatment processes do not effectively remove PFAS/PFOA from drinking water. These chemicals are specifically designed to resist breakdown, which makes them particularly difficult to remove through conventional filtration methods.
A 2020 study by the Environmental Working Group found PFAS in the drinking water of dozens of U.S. cities, affecting more than 200 million Americans. Many of these water systems met all federal and state drinking water standards despite containing these dangerous chemicals.23
“The only proven technology for effectively removing PFAS from drinking water at the residential level is reverse osmosis, ideally combined with activated carbon filtration. Point-of-entry systems that treat all water entering the home provide the most comprehensive protection.”
— Dr. Detlef Knappe, Professor of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, North Carolina State University

Lead: The Silent Neurotoxin in Aging Infrastructure

FACT

The EPA estimates that up to 10 million American homes still receive water through lead service lines. There is NO safe level of lead exposure, especially for children, whose developing brains are particularly vulnerable to its neurotoxic effects.24
